A Reuters

Portuguese court "comprehends" crime of passion

LISBON (Reuters) - A Portuguese court has reduced the prison sentence of a man convicted of killing his wife's lover to 12 years after ruling the community "partly comprehends" his motives, daily Jornal de Noticias reported on Monday.

The man had previously been sentenced to 17 years in jail for murder.

"I have been a cuckold for 15 years but today this will end," the daily reported the man as saying as he stormed into a restaurant and shot his wife's lover in the chest with a shotgun last year.

But now the court ruled that the defendant had "simply wanted to kill the man that had a relationship with his companion which had dishonoured him."

"The conduct of the individual had a motivation the community does not accept but partly comprehends," the newspaper reported the court's ruling as saying.
