Um 2oo7 pouco auspicioso

O ano de 2oo7 começa com o estigma do homicídio de Saddam Hussein [ou o enforcamento, se assim se preferir], numa questionável abordagem do princípio da não ingerência entre Estados.

Para além do lado jurídico e político, o lado religioso não é de menosprezar.

De acordo com as notícias veiculadas [e abaixo segue uma citação da BBC, que não só pertence a um dos Estados mais interventivos no Iraque, como é uma fonte de informação considerada como tendencialmente rigorosa e independente], o enforcamento foi ainda mais degradante do que se esperava, incluindo insultos verbais pelos executores / homicidas.

E Saddam morre como mártir islâmico, invocando Maomé, mártir político e religioso traído, perseguido e assassinado por invasores não islâmicos, tal qual cruzadas, onde só faltou o fogo e a cruz. Provavelmente os capuzes pretos dos executores de Saddam seriam mais rigorosos de brancos e com três K. Talvez por isso um telespectador da SIC defendia, há uns dias [num dos fóruns em que as pessoas telefonam aos berros] o enforcamento, também, do Presidente dos EUA [peculiar].

Como conclui a reportagem da BBC, 'It is going to be increasingly difficult for the government of Nouri Maliki to convince Sunni Arabs here that Saddam's execution was not merely an act of retaliation'.

Achtung baby. Ou 'act hung'.

E desde o começo desta bela história ainda não apareceram armas nucleares ou químicas.

Saddam morreu, como mártir, e com ele as desculpas que eventualmente existissem. Agora o mundo vira-se para os executores. Esses, sim, foram quem usou armas nucleares na história do mundo. E ainda as têm. Talvez fosse esta a lógica do telespectador da SIC...


Altogether, the execution as we now see it is shown to be an ugly, degrading business, which is more reminiscent of a public hanging in the 18th Century than a considered act of 21st Century official justice.

At first you can hear a Shia version of an Islamic prayer being called out.

Saddam Hussein was, of course, a Sunni Muslim, and all this was unquestionably intended as a sectarian insult.

Then the same voice starts calling out the name of the leading Shia cleric Moqtada al-Sadr. Sadr, the formal leader of the Mehdi Army, was an open enemy of Saddam.

Saddam is not intimidated by any of this, and repeats Moqtada Sadr's name disdainfully, as if to say he doesn't count for very much.

Then his gruff, rasping voice can be heard saying to the onlookers "Is this manly behaviour?"

But someone calls out 'You're going to hell.'

One of the witnesses, concerned about all this, says 'Keep quiet - he's just about to die.'

Saddam Hussein scarcely has an instant to collect his thoughts. He starts to mutter a prayer, but just as he speaks the name Muhammad, the chief hangman pulls the lever and the trapdoor opens.
